Thematic session 1:
Agroecology
Agricultural and food systems of the future must secure sustainable and healthy food production and simultaneously ensure a responsible approach to the environment under increasing impacts of climate change. In its role as a holistic concept and a multi-faceted toolbox, agroecology provides a set of principles for meeting these challenges within the earth’s carrying capacity. This thematic session will present experiences and approaches to agroecological farming in Germany and China.
Thematic session 2:
Sustainable livestock production
Livestock play a major role in sustainable food systems. Farm manure is a critical source of natural fertilizer, while locally, livestock production systems have the potential to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and to carbon sequestration in soils and biomass. At the same time, there is wide scope to improve livestock sector practices so that they are more sustainable, more equitable, and pose less risk to animal and human health. This thematic session discusses developments in sustainable livestock production in Germany and China.
Thematic session 3:
Agro-biodiversity
The rapid loss of biological diversity is one of the major global crises of our time. Agriculture is particularly dependent on biological diversity to ensure a supply of high-quality food and biogenic raw materials and to remain productive, competitive, and resilient in the long term. This thematic session presents approaches to on-farm conservation and sustainable use of agro-biodiversity for a climate-resilient food system and strong rural communities. The results are the outcome of a DCZ-led project on agro-biodiversity supported by funding from BMEL’s Innovation and Transformation Dialogue (ITD).
